With the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels and Create Hong Kong, the Offscreen Film Festival in Brussels, which specialises in cult films, is presenting a special programme of 18 Hong Kong films under the title "Hors Catégorie".
In addition to some all-time classics, the focus will be on films that were awarded a Category III classification. They challenged a whole range of societal norms and quickly gained a reputation as cult films.
"Under the heading 'Hors Catégorie', we focus on Hong Kong cinema outside of the mainstream, with a selection of 18 unconventional, extraordinary, pioneering and even demented genre offerings attesting to a vibrant, audacious and visceral film culture." - Offscreen
Offscreen will also hold an international conference on Hong Kong Category III films.
Experts taking part will be French critic, Julien Sévéon; Dr Calum Waddell of the University of Lincoln; and Dr Victor Fan of King's College, London. The conference, held in English, will conclude with the documentary "Category III: The Untold Story of Hong Kong Exploitation Cinema" by Calum Waddell. Entry is free but online reservation is required.
